Winter’s here again and its time to enjoy the snow. But before you hit the slopes, make sure you’re properly dressed with designer clothes.
Whatever the weather, you will enjoy yourself more if you are suitably dressed in designer clothing. In winter, this is even more important. The manufacturers of winter clothing do their best to make sure that your day on the slopes will be warm, dry and comfortable. Your dressing decisions should be based on a combination of the weather, your planned activities and of course, the amount of time you intend to stay outdoors.
Dressing right for the Weather
It’s the weather that dictates what you should wear. So even before you get dressed and put on your designer handbag, check your local weather forecast. Just because the sun is out and the sky is blue doesn’t mean that it’s warm outside. The sun also shines when the temperature is zero and below. Moreover, a blue sky is not a guarantee for the whole day. Remember that the weather is different everywhere. Even a few miles distant can mean different weather. Canadian winters are unpredictable and weather conditions can change quickly with no warning.
So now you have listened to the forecast and you know what weather to expect. How do you plan to spend your day? If you are into downhill skiing on the double diamond trails, you will probably be kept pretty warm from the exercise.
Dress your children for the weather.
Dress your children sensibly as well and choose their designer clothing carefully. The style of their clothing and designer handbags will be different from those that you buy for yourself. The reasons are obvious. Children get wet when playing in the snow in new balance shoes bought in shoes store. It’s what they do – the sleds, the sliding, the snow ball fights, building snowmen and igloos and snow castles, and the general fooling around and running and falling in the fresh, white, powdery stuff. Of course they get wet. You should expect nothing else from designer clothes.
The designer clothing manufacturers come to the rescue with new fabrics and new insulating materials. The clothes seem to get thinner and thinner each season while the insulation values go up. Snow gear is becoming warmer and warmer as well as more breathable and now even waterproof. Kids can now play outside in the snow for long periods and when they do come inside the designer handbag they will be warm and dry. Do your kids a favor and get them gloves made of water repelling, breathable fabric, not the rubber lined ones. When kids play in the snow, the moisture gets inside the gloves and stays there and has no way of escaping. Even if you put them in the dryer, they will most likely stay wet inside, but they will sure smell different, and neither you nor your kids will want that. The other important piece of kids’ winter attire is a woolen hat. It is well known that body loses most of its heat through the head.
Hats
Protect your youngsters and your babies in the same way when the weather is very cold. Choose a colorful hat of the right size for you child. Too small a hat will lead to excessive sweating, which in a way, if persistent, could cause damage to the hair follicles. But the hat must be loose enough to allow good air circulation, and made of breathable fabric that protects the ears and head from the wind.
Scarves
Other vulnerable parts of the body that must be well protected are the neck and chest areas. This is where nice warm scarves come in their own and the selection of scarves, neck-warmers and hat-scarf combination is so great and versatile that one can have a great deal of fun choosing.
The Right Winter Clothing
The latest in winter sportswear, which really means gear for the ski slopes, is waterproof, light weight, provides good insulation and breathes. This means that you will not sweat inside the suit as you once used to. The outerwear offered by the top end designer companies is made from a high-quality titanium fabric coating which is completely waterproof so even if the snow turns to sleet or rain, you will remain quite dry inside your snow suit.
One should dress in layers, much the same way that an onion is formed. The optimum number of layers is three or four. The layer closest to your skin includes the long thermal underwear, made of synthetic or natural fabric with the ability to absorb and move the moisture away from your skin. The underwear should fit your body snugly, without binding or restraining you in any way. If you stay dry, you will stay warm.
Over the underwear comes the insulating layer. This is what will actually keep you warm. This layer is designed to keep the cold out and the warmth in, simply by trapping air between the fibers. That warm sweater you got from your mother-in-law and in which you “wouldn’t be seen dead”, is ideal for this layer. This insulating layer should be loose enough to allow the air to circulate, but not so thick and large on you as to be bulky and restrict your movements. The best choices here would be a garment made of wool and fleece that has the ability to spread the moisture and allow the fabric to dry faster. It can be synthetic, but must be soft, lightweight and very comfortable.
Remember that an insulating layer should never be made of cotton, which absorbs moisture and retains it. For extremely cold temperatures, make sure that you wear two insulating layers to keep you warm and dry.
On top of those layers comes the outer protective layer which is designed to keep you away from the sleet and snow. The fibers used here must be completely water repellent and must also protect you from gusting, freezing winds.
The very latest, top of the line fabric has the ability to let moisture evaporate. This means that even if you perspire you will stay dry and warm. Again, your outer clothing must fit well and allow you complete freedom of movement. The more comfortable you are, the better you will feel and the longer you will be able to enjoy your time on the slopes.
Protecting your eyes on the ski-slopes is of paramount importance. The crisp but bright beauty of the sun reflecting off the pure white snow can dazzle and injure your eyes because of its extreme brightness. Wear good quality reflective sunglasses. Get you eyes used to the outside brightness gradually. Do not walk outside into the snow with your eyes closed and then suddenly open them and let all that light come flooding in.
The Canadian winter provides wonderful opportunities for winter fun and perfect places to escape the hectic bustle of the city. But choose the correct clothes and dress to stay active and warm. That’s the way to enjoy a winter holiday loaded with fun and excitement.
